“How to Design a Small House” (cover variations)
There are countless ways to layout a handful of elements, but arriving at the best possible arrangement is not always quick or intuitive. Here are twenty layout variations for one book cover.
“The Ideal Book” by William Morris
The Ideal Book was transcribed from a lecture given by Morris in 1893, three years prior to finishing the Kelmscott Press’s iconic masterpiece The Complete Works of Chaucer, which we were fortunate enough to see on Wednesday at the Hatcher Graduate Library.

Contemporary German Graphic Design
Following my trip to Germany, I brought a number of printed examples of contemporary German graphic into the classroom for both of my classes to peruse. Here are some photos from that day.

Germany 2019 (Day 12) Berlinische Galerie “Original Bauhaus” Exhibition, Reichstag Dome
The Dessau Bauhaus was designed to be viewed in the round, so on foot it’s nearly impossible to understand the entirety of the structure. But, when viewed from above, the complexity of the shape is much easier to appreciate.

Germany 2019 (Day 10) Kreuzberg, Werkbundarchiv (Museum of Things), Museum Island
Our third day in Berlin, our tenth day in Germany. The Museum of Things is one of the greatest museums I’ve ever visited. Its tight focus on the artifacts of the Deutscher Werkbund really appeals to the William Morris lover in me.
Germany 2019 (Day 9) AEG Turbine Factory, Berliner Funkturm, Photography Museum
Our first full day in Berlin. Today I visited the historic AEG Turbine Factory and photographed the Funkturm Tower (a self-initiated project) in honor of László Moholy-Nagy, who died on this day in 1946.

Today I woke up in the Bauhaus, a truly stirring experience. We toured the building and other historically significant places around Dessau.

A handful of photos from the Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany. All photos shot RAW with the Fujifilm X-100F and processed with Adobe Lightroom.

Today was our fifth day in Germany and first full day in Weimar, the birthplace of Walter Gropius’s grand experiment.

Paul Rand: The Art of Design (Online Auction Results)
The studio of Paul Rand went up for auction in the Fall of 2018. There were numerous classic prints and posters designed by Rand, but the real treasures were the objects in which he had some level of personal interaction or regular use.
Marina Willer at Michigan Theater
Marina Willer’s talk at the Michigan Theater was energetic and interesting. She’s an accomplished designer and is moving into all sorts of tangential disciplines related to graphic design.
Bike the Bridge 2019
Today I participated in the Bike the Bridge event with some of my former coworkers for the second time. Despite the cold and rain it was a pretty satisfying little venture into Canada and back. Here are some photos.
