  • Using Adobe Illustrator, create an 8.5" × 11" page and fill it with a grid of 12 evenly-spaced 2" × 2" squares.

  • Choose a single typeface to be used throughout this exercise.

  • Create mini-compositions inside each square, using one unique letterform per square. Do not repeat letterforms.

  • Isolate just enough of each letter to hint at its identity. Strike a balance between positive and negative space. Examine the forms and counter-forms of each composition until they feel appropriately balanced.

  • You may use Pathfinder, Clipping Masks, Layers, or any other method you prefer to achieve the “cropped effect.”

  • Create twelve unique compositions in total.

  • On the bottom of the 8.5" × 11" page include your name, the name of your chosen typeface, and the unaltered letters used in your compositions.

Make a printout and pin it to the crit wall.

Export a .pdf and name it according to the file-naming specifications listed on the Policies page.

Submit the .pdf to the “Turn in Work” folder by the due date listed above.
